Interacting Galaxies in Sparsely Populated Groups

چکیده

We calculated the median values of the following parameters for 87 groups of galaxies with three to eight components: the mean rms velocity of the galaxies in the group, Sv = 166 km/s; the harmonic mean radius, Rh = 29 kpc; and the mass-to-light ratio, Mvir/L = 33M⊙/L⊙. The Mvir/L ratio depends on the population of the system, while Sv does not depend on Rh. To ascertain the relationship between the activity of galaxies in groups and their morphological composition and the effect of the environment on the evolutionary processes in groups, we consider the fraction of galaxies with UV excess in the sample of interacting galaxies in groups (6%), single peculiar galaxies (8%), and isolated galaxies (4%) and their morphological composition. We also show that the number of active galaxies decreases with increasing population of the group of galaxies, while the frequency of occurrence of early-type (E/S0) galaxies increases.

Internal Structure of high-z Galaxies with NGST

Models of galaxy evolution are used to determine the redshift interval, sampled in the 1–5μm wavelength window, over which metallicity, internal extinction, and internal kinematics of high redshift galaxies can be derived from emission and absorption line measurements. A multi-aperture multi-object spectrograph is the optimal solution for such kind of study, since current data such as the HDF i...

The late infall of cold dark matter onto an isolated galaxy produces flows with definite local velocity vectors throughout the galactic halo. It also produces caustic rings, which are places in the halo where the dark matter density is very large. The self-similar model of halo formation predicts that the caustic ring radii an follow the approximate law an ≃ 1/n. I interpret bumps in the rotati...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Population Projections for Sparsely Populated Areas: Reconciling ‘‘Error’’ and Context

Population projections are increasingly utilised as tools for understanding and modelling the economic, social, and environmental futures of sparsely populated areas. This study examines issues around “fit for purpose” for the application of projections to remote contexts. We focus on projections made for the Northern Territory of Australia, a jurisdiction in the north of the country, to assess...

Exploring sparsely populated states of macromolecules by diamagnetic and paramagnetic NMR relaxation.

Sparsely populated states of macromolecules, characterized by short lifetimes and high free-energies relative to the predominant ground state, often play a key role in many biological, chemical, and biophysical processes. In this review, we briefly summarize various new developments in NMR spectroscopy that permit these heretofore invisible, sparsely populated states to be detected, characteriz...
